The Broken Sword - Poul Anderson A short fantasy novel that reads like mythology or an epic, and it's of the un-Disneyfied, dark & bloody variety (more so than the likes of GRRM), and somehow, probably its fatalism, Pagan v.s. Christianity theme, & female characters like Freda & Leea & the witch who actually get to do stuff (as is the case in some ancient mythology), reminds me of The Mists of Avalon. IMHO it is not without flaws but overall better than all the recently published "epic" fantasies I've seen.
