The Years of Rice and Salt - Kim Stanley Robinson An amazing alternative history novel. It's use of reincarnation is smart and neat, which serves both as a plot device and as a metaphor for human condition, and I really enjoy its original approach to modernization and the interactions between civilizations. One thing I really love about Kim Stanley Robinson's utopianism is that his utopian vision is not a static state of perfection but an ongoing, never-ending struggle towards enlightenment, progress and liberation. It is through this kind of idealism that the narrative reconciles tragedies with a sense of hope.
